Why I Chose to Attend Lafayette College

In all honesty, Lafayette chose me.

  • The Admissions Office had sent me a letter recognizing my participation in PGSIS and saying they prized active and worldly student leaders like myself.
  • One of the newer German teachers at my high school was a recent graduate of Lafayette with whom I formed a strong connection.
  • The institution offered courses in the very things I was interested in, namely a dual degree in Engineering & International Studies.
    • I didn’t quite end up with that exact combo since I switched majors midway through. However, for this and the degrees I did attain, Lafayette’s academics are half liberal arts and half engineering which is a perfect mix for my interests.
  • With 2400 students it was small enough to be intimate yet large enough to provide a world-class education with a diverse array of learning opportunities.
    • I came from a relatively small public school– there were 180 people in my graduating class– so Lafayette was sizably bigger although not so big as to be overwhelming.
  • Although my parents always thought with me being a world traveler that I would go to a college far away from home, it turned out that being only 16 miles away had its benefits for moving in/out and coming home when needed (which wasn’t often but still nice and convenient.)
